Geo - Political Conditions in the East
During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries Persia, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Egypt were facing a great economic decline. At the same time the number of their population had began to seriously decline. Oriental writers cite official documents and blame tax revenues imposed upon the residents of the various countries by the ruling war-lords and later by the Mongols.
The writings of Arab and Persian authors of the later Middle Ages cover extensively the decline in the number of local inhabitants. Although those accounts are very often exaggerated, in essence they are factual.
A ground surface survey made by an archeological expedition of the University of Chicago in the province of Diyala, east of Baghdad, indicates the tremendous decrease of the built-up in that area and points that it was due to a great de-population.
At the end of the fourteenth century the wars of Timur Lenk had the same results, while the misrule of some Turkoman rulers of the fifteenth century must also have a disastrous effect on the demographic development of both Iran and Iraq.
The Mongol invasion and congest of Iran and Iraq was followed by massacres and devastation that brought havoc upon the population of those countries. Khurasan suffered more than other regions but the populations of Tabaristan and Iraq must have also been depleted at that time.
After this, other wars with neiboring states further contributed to the depopulation. Some towns of Persia remained in ruins for a long time. A Persian author who wrote 100 years after the invasion of Mongols names more than 30 towns which had been reduced to villages or were still in ruins.
In Iran the population appears to have numbered 870,000 at the peak of the Abbasid rule, 400,000 in the year 1100 and only 60,000 after the Mongol conquest.1
Demologists claim that a clear indicator of population trends is the development of grain prices. Data of grain prices in Iran during the later Middle Ages shows a decline from the tenth century onward. During the first half of the fourteenth century grain prices were lower by 17 percent than they had been 200 years previously. E. Astor points out that though the price of grain had declined by 17 percent, the price of bread declined much less, no doubt due to the fact that baker's wages had increased. A lessened demand for cereals and increased wages owing to a shortage of workers are clear signs of depopulation2.
Syria had also suffered from the Mongol invasion, but not as much as Persia and Iraq. The invasions and the rumors preceding it drove the Syrian population to Egypt, where many remained there even after it. So the population of Syria can hardly have increased much after the second half of the thirteen century. According to the studies of A.W.Poliak, the whole population of Syria and Palestine may have been between 900,000 to 1.2 million inhabitants before the Black Death which reduced the population by a third. The Black Death was followed by 15 other epidemics from the mid-fourteenth to the end of the fifteenth century3. So the population numbers must have declined even further.
It appears that while the main reason for the reduction of population in Persia and Iraq was the result of massacres by Mongol,Turkish and Circassians invaders, in Egypt and Syria was the series of epidemics whose underlying cause seems to have been the misrule, heedless exploitation of the population . Many inhabitants fell victims to the epidemics because of malnutrition. Many villages were abandoned because people were incapable of bearing their tax burden, relocating in the outskirts of large cities, only to fall victims to new illnesses and epidemics unknown to them.
Along with the population decline naturally came an agricultural decline. Great areas of the Middle East with rich soil and which were cultivated in the past, began to produce a diminished amount of agricultural products.

July 1782 - The Order of the Illuminati joins forces with Freemasonry at the Congress of Wilhelmsbad. The Comte de Virieu, an attendee at the conference, comes away visibly shaken. When questioned about the "tragic secrets" he brought back with him, he replies: "I will not confide them to you. I can only tell you that all this is very much more serious than you think." From this time on, according to his biographer, "the Comte de Virieu could only speak of Freemasonry with horror."

1783 Because of Weishaupts power and arrogance, complaints begin to surface that the Order was subversive of political and religious authority, the schools and the press. In October of 1783, a disgruntled member of the order, Joseph Utzschneider, denounces Weishaupt to the duchess Maria Anna of Bavaria, who in turn speaks to Carl Theodore, the Bavarian king.

An Illuminati courier named Lanze is struck by lightning and killed while traveling by horseback through the town of Ratisbon. When Bavarian officials examine the contents of his saddle bags, they discover the existence of the Order of the Illuminati and find plans detailing the coming French Revolution. The Bavarian government attempts to alert the government of France of impending disaster, but the French government fails to heed this warning. Bavarian officials arrest all members of the Illuminati they can find, but Weishaupt and others have gone underground and cannot be found.
Oct. 11, 1785 - Bavarian authorities raid the home of an Illuminati member named Von Zwack. They discover Illuminati documents which show quite clearly that they plan to bring about a "universal revolution that should deal the death-blow to society...this revolution will be the work of the secret societies, and that is one of our great mysteries."
1785 Carl Theodore issues another edict specifically outlawing Weishaupt’s Order of Illuminati, as well as providing rewards for information on them. Weishaupt flees to a neighboring province, as does Count Massenhausen.

1796 - Freemasonry becomes a major issue in the Presidential election in the United States. John Adams wins the election by opposing Masonry, and his son John Quincy Adams warns of the dire threat to the nation posed by the Masonic Lodges: "I do conscientiously and sincerely believe that the Order of Freemasonry, if not the greatest, is one of the greatest moral and political evils under which the Union is now laboring."

1798 - George Washington acknowledges that Illuminati activity has come to America: "It is not my intention to doubt that the doctrine of the Illuminati and the principles of Jacobinism had not spread in the United States. On the contrary, no one is more satisfied of this fact than I am."

1798 John Robison publishes Proofs of a Conspiracy in which he describes 84 German masonic lodges and says that the Illuminati still work covertly behind the scenes. Copy is received by George Washington.
1798 Publication of Augustin Barruels "Memoirs of Jacobianism". Barruel comes to similar conclusions as Robison, that when the Illuminati was outlawed it went underground and resurfaced as an organization called the German Union, which played a role in creating the French Revolution in 1789. This thesis is later discussed in 1918 with Stauffer's New England and the Bavarian Illuminati. Knigge was allegedly involved with both the German Union and the Eclectic Alliance, which was used as a cover for converting Masonic lodges to Illuminism between 1780 and 1784.
